132 kV Mercallo-Cameri power line: Terna presents new variant in underground cable to municipalities around Novara

February 2019

Project includes 21 km of new underground cables and the demolition of more than 100 pylons

A meeting was held today in the municipality of Oleggio, in agreement with the Piedmont Region, between Terna and the municipal authorities of Borgo Ticino, Cameri, Varallo Pombia, Pombia, Marano Ticino, Oleggio and Bellinzago Novarese, involved in the cable variant to the existing 132 kV Mercallo-Cameri overhead power line.

The Company explained the details of the project. Creation of a new underground stretch over 21 km long between Cameri and Borgo Ticino will allow for the demolition of the same length of overhead lines. The project will also include dismantling of a further 3 km of the 220 kV Magenta – Pallanzeno power line in the municipality of Borgo Ticino. Overall, more than 100 electricity pylons will be removed.

The meeting allowed Terna to engage with municipal authorities regarding the route of the new section of underground electricity line. Observations made will be evaluated and considered by the Company with the goal of launching the authorisation process by summer.

The project, which will lead to greater efficiency and sustainability for the local electricity grid, represents the implementation of the 2009 Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Piedmont region connected to the creation of the Trino – Lacchiarella power line.
