Sustainability means working responsibly every day, respecting one’s stakeholders in the direct business sphere and integrating a careful consideration of the environmental and social impacts of corporate activity into management policies and systems.
The objective is to establish and maintain relations based on trust. A good relationship with employees, suppliers, grid users and customers in general, institutions, and regulatory authorities, as well as consideration of the Company’s impact on the environment and local communities, are essential conditions for growing and creating value for shareholders.
Originating in the awareness and pride of providing a service of general interest to society, a sense of responsibility is part of the cultural heritage of the people who work at Terna.
Our Code of Ethics sets forth our principles and our commitments to our stakeholders. The continuity and quality of the electricity service is crucial, and impartiality, non-discrimination, transparency, and respect for environmental and social situations are explicit concerns in the daily management of our business. These principles apply to all the Group companies.
We recognize and undertake to abide by the principles of the Global Compact, the highest values that the United Nations recommends to enterprises. The Global Compact’s ten principles regarding human rights, labour, the environment, and the fight against corruption are universally accepted because they originate in:
- the U.N.’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights
- the International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work
- the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development
- the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
If you have comments or observations regarding our operations and the way we report them on this website and in our Sustainability Report, please write to CSR@terna.it. We will be pleased to consider your opinions and to explain our point of view and our plans.

The term sustainability comes from the definition of sustainable development: “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, “Our Common Future”, 1987). Within an enterprise, sustainability regards the set of policies, management systems, and initiatives that show concern for the social and environmental impacts of the conduct of business.
