European Grid Codes

EC Regulation no. 714/09 assigned ENTSO-E, the European Network of Grid Operators of Electricity Transmission Systems, the task of drafting European Grid Codes, on the basis of an annual priority list defined by the European Commission, in compliance with the framework directives adopted by ACER, the Agency for Cooperation of Energy Regulators and however following consultation with stakeholders.

Upon request by the European Commission, these Codes are defined for cross-border issues regarding generation plant connections, the integration of markets and the management of grid congestion as well as safety and interoperability of transmission grids.

European grid codes, adopted by the Commission, will become supranational and binding legislative deeds that will prevail over the national ones regarding cross-border issues. Therefore:

  • National Grid Codes will remain valid in those parts that do not concern cross-border issues
  • European Grid Codes can provide a number of “parameters” while the national ones can provide the most stringent requirements.

The ENTSO-E is presently involved in 14 Grid Code projects in collaboration with the European Commission and the ACER implementing the abovementioned Regulation and in line with the political and operational conclusions reached by the European Council last February 4.
The pilot project of European Grid Codes has as its objective the requirements for connecting to electricity grids (requirements for generators).
