S.O.C. Security Operations Center: Terna’s integrated security and safety

How we operate to guarantee the Italian electricity system’s safety by protecting assets, by preventing accidents and for guaranteeing our stakeholders rigorous inspection of bid procedures and a broad range of activities for preventing illegal infiltration attempts.

Terna relies on an integrated security and safety plan that is unique in Italy.

An avant-garde Security Operations Center that manages and analyzes millions of computer and physical safety data 24 hours a day.

Terna is a leading grid operator in the front line for protecting one of the country’s major strategic infrastructures also thanks to a series of official agreements started with the signing of the first memorandum for the protection of the Italian electricity system between the Minister of the Interior Roberto Maroni and CEO Flavio Cattaneo.

Terna’s integrated security and safety plan is developed on precise foundations. For protecting assets: 383 sub-stations and over 63,000 km of electricity lines are part of the national safety plan.

For protection and prevention, the following bodies are involved:

  • 6,000 Carabinieri stations

  • 800 divisions of the Customs Guard

  • nearly 1,500 Police Headquarters

  • nearly 500 plants and offices

  • 10,000 computers

  • 8 million pieces of information daily.

Consolidated security and safety also thanks to the first national agreement signed with the department of the Postal Police, the first of its kind.

For Terna, security also means preventing the risks of occupational accidents and protecting the environment. For this purpose: 90,000 training hours were implemented, 300 construction sites monitored and 6,000 people involved.
Prevention activities are also carried out through monitoring construction sites and innovative aptitude tests for employees working on electricity stations and lines.

Terna’s security and safety plan also guarantees its stakeholders. The Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Customs Guard ensures specific control for allowing bid access to a growing number of companies and more extensive prevention activity against illegal infiltrations.
