We are responsible for the operation, safety and future of the large European grid. Our development strategy and investments in Italy and the world.
The business sector in which Terna operates is electricity, an essential resource for life, development and growth of all peoples in the world.
After being produced, electricity must be transmitted. Electricity transmission is the fundamental sector of the energy production process in which Terna operates in Italy. With over 63,000 km of high voltage lines, Terna is the first independent operator in Europe and the seventh in the world for kilometers of electricity lines managed.
The company’s important development strategy and investments have made Italy one of the main players of the European electricity sector. Thanks to its geographical location and to a major industrial resource such as Terna, Italy aims at becoming the Mediterranean “electricity hub” having set three significant objectives: increasing safety for the national and international electricity system, reducing dependence on a limited number of energy suppliers and making Italy the center of the European electricity system, particularly for developing electricity interconnections with the Balkan countries and North Africa.
Terna is included in ENTSO-E, the body that groups 41 Transmission System Operators from 34 EU countries; at the EU level, this body’s task is to adopt European grid codes regarding cross-border issues, the ten-year Development Plan of the European electricity grid and the common tools for coordinating grid management.
Europe has a high-tech electricity transmission grid. It is an interconnected “grid of grids” that integrates thousands of sources located throughout the continent and the leading national electricity operators. The grid is constantly monitored, regulated and developed both in infrastructures and in technology. Terna is among the leading players of the large European grid’s operation, safety and future.
