- What is Terna’s activity?
Terna’s task is to guarantee a service of public interest to the population: the transmission of electricity. Terna is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing the national transmission grid, as well as managing the energy flow through the dispatching system.
- How much does transmission affect the electricity bill received by Italian consumers?
Terna accounts for less than 3% of the value of the electricity bill paid by the final customer
- Which are the energy sources?
Energy sources are divided into traditional and renewable sources. Traditional sources are coal, fuel oil and natural gas. Renewable sources are sun, wind, water and geothermal resources, tidal power, waves and the transformation into electricity of vegetable products and of organic and inorganic waste.
- What is sustainability?
Its first definition dates back to 1987 when the World Commission on Environment and Development, also known as Brundtland Commission, in its Report “Our Common Future”, stated that the world was facing a “global challenge” that needed to be met by adopting a new development model, defined as “sustainable”. The most known definition describes it as “development that meets the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
- What is sustainability for businesses?
Sustainability for businesses is a strategic driver aimed at creating value, building and maintaining their reputation, preventing risks and reducing costs; this occurs through the definition, implementation and monitoring of policies and management systems, the definition of goals and the assessment of results that must be reported in a complete and transparent way to stakeholders.
- What is sustainability for Terna?
The main reference of Terna’s approach toward sustainability is represented by its commitment to its service which is indispensable for the operation of the entire electricity system and for guaranteeing electricity to all the population. Respect for the environment and for local communities, attention to occupational safety and personnel training are strictly linked to the responsibility for the service. This approach is based on the principles of the Code of Ethics and is functional to the creation of value, being reflected in the growing attention devoted to Terna by socially responsible investors (SRI).
- Which areas are involved in Terna’s Corporate Social Responsibility?
Terna recognizes four responsibility areas, three traditional ones on which Corporate Social Responsibility is based (economic, environmental and social) and another one for the electricity service which is specific to its mission.
Responsibility for the electricity service: providing a safe, reliable, continuous and affordable service, providing an efficient transmission system also planning development and maintenance measures; ensuring all grid users equal conditions according to impartiality and neutrality principles.
Economic responsibility: timely implementation of the measures included in the Grid Development Plan, search for operational efficiency and capital optimization, development of non regulated activities and acquisition of new assets, particularly NTG portions that Terna does not yet own.
Environmental responsibility: finding the right balance between energy needs and environmental and territorial protection through solutions that ensure the country the electricity it needs at the best conditions of reliability, cost and environmental sustainability.
Social responsibility: enhancing Terna’s personnel that has unique technical skills capable of ensuring the community a professional and efficient service; providing safety and risk prevention for ensuring the physical integrity of people, developing and maintaining the industrial relation system and, toward the outside world, returning value to the communities in which the company operates through the support to social, cultural and humanitarian initiatives.
- Which are Terna’s initiatives in the community?
In consistence with its Corporate Giving policy, in 2010 Terna confirmed its support to social, environmental, humanitarian and cultural initiatives in line with corporate strategies. The most significant initiatives in 2010 included:
- the completion of a large volunteer project through which some of Terna’s employees volunteered in building an electricity line in Kami, Bolivia,
- the third edition of the Terna Prize for contemporary art, and
- “Vote your Value”, the corporate solidarity initiative linked to the adoption by employees of Terna’s general principles and values; with their voting, they oriented the allocation of the charity contributions to projects based on these principles.
- Which are Terna’s initiatives for biodiversity?
In 2009, Terna signed a three-year strategic partnership with the WWF, aiming at considering the WWF’s eco-regional conservation strategies in the electricity grid’s planning criteria. A series of environmental recovery and mitigation measures in some WWF oases completed this partnership, the first ones of which were ended in early 2011 at the Oases in Tuscany: Stagni di Focognano (FI) and Padule-Orti Bottagone (LI).
With LIPU-Lega Italiana Protezione Uccelli, Terna is conducting scientific research on the interaction of HV electricity lines with birdlife.
Lastly, Terna has been helping some bird species, particularly birds of prey, to use pylons and watching towers and places to nest, with the installation of artificial nests on its pylons, in collaboration with the scientific association Ornis Italica, artificial nests on pylons. From the over 500 nests installed on the pylons, over 1000 chicks took flight including kestrels, Eurasian Scops owls and peregrine falcons. Since 2010, also the European roller, an endangered migratory bird species, chose Terna’s nests for its reproduction.
- In which sustainability indexes is Terna included?
Sustainability indexes are stock market indexes that monitor the ESG performance trend (Environmental, Social and Governance) of listed companies, highlighting the best situations. Terna’s inclusion initiated in 2005 when it was admitted to the FTSE4Good Global and Europe, to then enter the AXIA Ethical and CSR, the ECPIs (Ethical Global, Ethical Euro and Ethical EMU) and the MSCIs (Global Sustainability and Europe Sustainability). In 2009, the company entered the ASPI Eurizone and the Ethibels (Excellence and Sustainability ESI Europe) and, in September, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World. In 2010 Terna was also included in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe and in the FTSE ECPIs (Italia SRI Benchmark and Italia SRI Leaders).
- Which sustainability indicators did Terna adopt?
In consistence with the transparency principle that is typical of social responsibility policies, each year Terna publishes its Sustainability Report, drafted on the basis of the guidelines defined by the GRI – Global Reporting Initiative, the International reporting standard established by the UN and subject to assessment on the part of an external company. Since its 2009 Report, for the transparency and completeness of the information provided, Terna reached the A+ level, the highest established in the application of the GRI guidelines.

4. Human Resources
- How can I send my resume to Terna?
The channel through which Terna receives resumes is a specific area of the website where one’s resumes can be uploaded.
- I cannot upload my resume online. What should I do?
To receive help you can send a notice to firstname.lastname@example.org, explaining your difficulties in uploading your resume.
- Which is the selection procedure adopted by Terna?
To select new graduates or newly qualified students, the assessment center is generally used and one or more technical and professional interviews. To select other types of personnel, a series of interviews is used aiming at verifying the total compliance with the profile sought for. The first interview is always conducted by HR specialists, the subsequent ones by HR managers and Sector Directors where the employee will be hired. The selection procedure, is generally carried out in Rome, at Terna’s headoffice.
- What kind of collaboration can I have with Terna?
Within the context of agreements and relations with Universities and Business Schools thesis, courses, internships, project works, and scholarships can be obtained and also know-how exchanges with university professors in the company’s training courses and with our experts (managers, professionals, specialists) in university courses based on workshops and seminars or job orientation activity.
- How can I send a request for an internship, course or scholarship?
Requests must be submitted by the institute and or the applicant to email@example.com of the HR Department; after having assessed the interest and feasibility, this department identifies and assigns a company tutor and finalizes the agreement.
- How is an internship carried out at Terna?
Internships are aimed at the three-year degree or specialization course university students. Internships may be aiming at developing the final degree thesis or at acquiring university training credits (CFU). Internships usually last 6 months and are held at Terna’s offices throughout the territory. Each intern is aided by a company tutor in drafting the training project or thesis that is shared with his/her original university. Expenses are not refunded.
- How are courses organized at Terna?
Courses are aimed at students who graduated in the three-year university programs or specialization courses. Courses usually last 6/12 months and are held at Terna’s offices throughout the territory. Each participant is aided by a company tutor in drafting the training project that is shared with his/her original university. Expenses are partly refunded.
- Whom should I contact to organize a student guided visit to one of Terna’s plants?

- Which is Terna’s policy for protected categories?
Hiring of personnel belonging to protected categories, with profiles that match company needs, occurs periodically in territorial units that stipulate agreements with Provincial Labor Offices.
5. Electricity System
- What is dispatching?
Electricity cannot be stored. It is therefore necessary to continuously produce the quantity of energy required by all consumers (families and industries) and deliver it to the national transmission grid so that electricity supply and demand are always balanced, therefore guaranteeing continuity and safety of the service supplied. Management of this energy flow along the grid is known as dispatching.
- Who owns the transmission grid?
Terna is the main owner of the National Electricity Transmission Grid; it owns over 63,000 km of high voltage lines throughout the national territory and 431 transforming and switching stations.
- What is the activity carried out by National Control Center?
It ensures the operation of the national electricity system in conditions of utmost safety in order to guarantee continuity and quality in the electricity service. For this purpose, the National Control Center continuously acquires all the data and information on the situation of the electricity system and, in relation to the electricity demand trend, takes action to guarantee a good balance between demand and supply.
- What is the National Transmission Grid Development Plan?
The National Transmission Grid Development Plan is a document that Terna draws up each year and which contains all the development activity undertaken, or to be undertaken in the ten-year period involved, on the Transmission Grid. For every region, activity is grouped on the basis of voltage levels and according to types (stations, joints and long-distance power lines). Once drawn up, the Plan is then submitted to the interested Regions and to the Ministry for Economic Development that verifies its compliance with existing laws, with its strategic and operative guidelines and with the objectives deriving from the Concession.
- What is an interconnection?
Electricity exchanges among neighboring countries (interconnection) play a very important role in the European policies for establishing a single market. At present, the Italian electricity grid is “interconnected” with the grids of neighboring countries through 22 lines that connect it with France, Corsica, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and Greece.
- When did the peak electricity demand occur?
56.822 MW is the new historical record for maximum power demand on the Italian electricity grid. The figure, registered on Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at 5 pm, in a day characterized by a very cold temperature, is 233 megawatt higher than the former historical record (56,589 MW, July 20, 2007) and 2,435 MW (+4.5%) higher than the 2006 winter record (54,387 MW, December 13, 2006).
- Which is the body in charge of preparing and distributing statistics on the national electricity system?
Terna’s Statistical Office, part of the Sistan (National Statistical System), has the statutory task of drafting the official statistics for the entire national electricity sector and is therefore also responsible for our country for disseminating official statistical information to international bodies such as Eurostat, IEA, OCSE, the UN.
- Where can I find the GAUDÌ application in Terna’s website referring to the obligations according to resolution ARG/elt 125/10?

- Where can I find the list of electricity distribution companies over the national territory?
In Terna’s website, at http://impresedistributrici.terna.it, the list is published of distribution companies and relative identification codes used by them to define POD codes. In the same section, the historical archives are available of changes occurred in these companies. Terna also provides, for each distribution company in the list, the information on the classification as a reference or subordinate distribution company pursuant to Attachment A to resolution 107/09 of the Authority for Electricity and Gas (TIS).
- What is MyTerna portal ?
MyTerna is the B2B portal implemented by Terna to render commercial and communication relations with electricity Operators more efficient and effective. It is a service portal that Terna provides to its counterparties, and is designed on the needs of each customer based on a personal access system.
- Who are the users of MyTerna and which services are offered?
MyTerna is a portal for all Electricity Operators such as: Withdrawal Dispatching Users, Input Dispatching Users, Producers, Distributors, Shippers, Interruptible customers. The portal offers its users the possibility of carrying out various transactions; services provided are divided in the following sections:
- My Data: allows viewing in real time the main data of the relation with Terna:

4. Technical and Market Data
- Master Data Management: allows directly managing the master data of the company while managing key contacts and users.
- Managing Connection Requests to the NTG: allows requesting a new connection to Terna’s grid, verifying the progress of the request and monitoring the lifecycle of the connection request up to the signing of the contract.
- Managing Contracts and Guarantees: allows entering new contracts, exchanging, renewing or terminating existing ones, viewing the progress of the requests. Furthermore, for all contracts involving the payment of a financial guarantee covering contract obligations, all the lifecycle of that guarantee can be managed. Requests to integrate/reduce, replace or return a guarantee can be managed, viewing in real time the progress of each file; in particular, it is presently possible to enter the following contracts/agreements:
- Withdrawal and Input Dispatching
- CTR and MIS Agreements
- Exchange of information with Terna: allows submitting a ticket for a claim or requesting explanations on specific issues to Terna’s departments in charge of these matters, verifying in real time the progress of the requests.
- Viewing and reading the principal news referring to Terna and the electricity market, links of interests supporting operations on the electricity market and the principal documents required in managing relations with Terna.
- How should I register on MyTerna?
After having accessed from http://myterna.terna.it/portal/portal/myterna, you can select:
- “You already are a user of MyTerna portal” if you have already registered to the portal or if you want to terminate the registration process replacing the temporary password you received by email.
- “You are not yet registered on MyTerna portal” if you want to register to the portal. The following can register on MyTerna Portal:
- a Counterparty that has already entered with Terna a contract/agreement or started a connection request to the NTG,
- a New User, that holds no contract relations with Terna nor Connection requests to the NTG.
- What does it mean to request a connection to Terna’s grid?
Requesting a connection to the National Electricity Transmission Grid means expecting to input/withdraw energy from the Italian HV or EHV electricity system. For all plants with a power exceeding 10,000 kW, connection requests must be submitted to Terna.
- In which area of MyTerna portal can a connection request to the NTG be submitted?
In the portal section “My services” the area “Managing connection requests” is present. Within this area, the user can submit a connection request to the NTG by selecting “New connection request”: a specific form must then be filled out and the documents required must be attached.
- How do I obtain grid connection?
The connection procedure starts with a request that must be filled out on My Terna portal, indicating the data of the applicant and of the plant to be connected to the NTG. Following this, Terna prepares an estimate that identifies the works on the NTG that are necessary for the connection, together with relative timeframes and costs. On the basis of this estimate, a project of the works to be implemented on the NTG must be drafted; this project will then have to be authorized by the authorities in charge, as well as the user’s plant. After having obtained the authorization, still through the portal, a Minimum Detailed Technical Solution is requested, that Terna drafts and sends to the user. Lastly, the connection contract can be entered into.
- Is the entire connection procedure managed on MyTerna portal?
Yes, with the exception for the project and the contract that will be managed on hardcopies. All other obligations included in the file are made online through the portal functions (ex. Notices regarding progress of the authorization procedure, notices on work progress, acceptance of the estimate – SMTG – and of the detailed solution - STMD).
- How are the works for connecting to the NTG authorized?
NTG works for connection of a plant to the NTG are authorized in two ways:
- for production plants from renewable sources, a single procedure is carried out for the production plant and the NTG connection, pursuant to Legislative Decree no. 387/03;
- for other types of plants, Terna may autonomously carry out the authorization procedure for the NTG works necessary for the connection, according to Law no. L. 239/04.
- In which cases should the 30% connection fee be paid upon the acceptance of the connection estimate?
The payment of 30% of the connection fee upon the acceptance of the connection estimate should only and exclusively be paid for connection requests submitted after January 1, 2011, or any power variation in requests that were already submitted.
- I have a connection request for a production plant for which I must submit the periodical report on progress of the Authorization procedure, what should I do?
The form for this report is available under "View my Ge.Co. files" by clicking on "Request" for the connection file for which the report must be submitted and then on “Authorization procedure communication”. The portal will propose the possibility of entering the explanatory notes on the procedure progress. It is sufficient to enter these notes and send them to Terna to meet the obligation established by AEEG Resolution no. 125/10. It is no longer necessary to send documents (neither in computer format nor in hardcopy).
- I have a connection request for a production plant for which I must submit the Notice regarding the start of the Authorization Procedure, what should I do?
The form to be used to submit the notice is available under "View my Ge.Co. files" by clicking on "Request" for the connection request for which the notice must be sent. The portal will propose the possibility to upload the document certifying the start of the authorization procedure; at the end of uploading, a field will become available for entering the start date of the authorization procedure.
- I have a connection request for a production plant for which I must submit the Notice pursuant to AEEG Resolution no. 99/08 and subsequent integrations and modifications, for informing about the start/delay of beginning of works, what should I do?
Such notice is present on the portal under "SAL Notices" (SAL "Stato Avanzamento Lavori" Progress status). The form for this notice is available under "View my Ge.Co. files" by clicking on "Request" for the connection file for which the notice must be submitted. The portal will propose the possibility to enter the start date of the works or the reasons for not having started the works and at the same time, the expected start dates for the works can be updated, as well as for work completion and entrance into operation. On the deadline section, the date within which the notice must be sent can be viewed and the days left to the expiration (“View my Ge.Co. files", by clicking on "Status" relative to the request involved). It is no longer necessary to send the hardcopy form.
