Electricity consumption in Italy continues to grow

 
+1.3% in June (+2% normalized data)
In the first six months, the demand increased by 1.8%
 
In June 2010 the electricity demand in Italy, equal to 26.7 billion kWh, increased by 1.3% compared to June 2009.
Without the opposite effects of an average monthly temperature that was lower by about one degree C compared to June 2009 and based on an equal number of working days (21), the variation in electricity demand for June 2010 is +2.0%.
In the first six months of 2010, the electricity demand increased by 1.8% compared to the same period in 2009, when a sharp drop was registered compared to the same period in 2008 (-8.6%). Based on the same number of working days, the result for the first six months of 2010 is equal to +1.7%.
In June 2010, the electricity demand was met for 85.8% with the national production and for the remaining part (14.2%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More in detail, the net national production (23.3 billion kWh) increased by 1.1% compared to June 2009. Thermoelectric production rose (+1.7%), as did geothermal (+4.4%), wind power (+27.1%) and photovoltaic (+15.9%); hydroelectric production dropped (-2.8%).

At the territorial level, the variation in electricity demand was quite different according to areas: +2.9 in the North, +1.3% in Central Italy and -1.7% in the South. The 26.7 billion kWh required during June 2010 were distributed for 45.8 in the North, 29.6 in Central Italy and 24.6 in the South.

The short term profile for June 2010 showed a seasonally adjusted variation in electricity demand equal to +0.1% compared to the previous month.

The detailed analysis of the monthly electricity consumption is available in the publication “Monthly Report on the Electricity System”, under the section "Electricity System – Dispatching – Operation Data" in the website www.terna.it. Lastly, as of January 2010, national monthly reports are published including data about the plants’ net production.

Terna also informs that as of today the final document on "Statistical Data on Electricity in Italy – 2009" with the related summary is available in its own website www.terna.it. The document shows how the variation in electricity demand in 2009, equal to -5.7 compared to 2008, has increased by one percent compared to the temporary data assessed in early 2010.
