A new energy highway between Pavia and Lodi: first phase completed, second phase just begun for the "Chignolo Po – Maleo" line.

Work for over 100 employees and at least 18 companies, over 250 million euros invested
Benefits will include saving over 25 million euros a year for the electricity system
For each km of new overhead line, 3 km of old power lines will be removed |

The electricity grid between Pavia and Lodi will soon have an added advantage: now that the project’s first phase has been completed, which included acquiring land for nearly 80 thousand sqm, conducting geologic surveys, the actual planning and assigning of contracts for the civil works, the second phase has begun. This includes opening the constructions sites for building the new 380 kV "Chignolo Po-Maleo" electricity line that Terna has planned with a total investment of 250 million euros, in line with its Development Plan, for renewing and creating a more efficient grid in one of Lombardy’s critical areas within 2012 , an important hub for central Europe.
This project will bring significant advantages to the electricity and environmental system in the area:
- Upgrading the electricity grid in the province of Lodi: for each km of new overhead line built, nearly 3 km of old power lines will be removed (24 km of overhead lines vs 64 km removed); 225 old pylons will be removed, 80 hectares of land will be freed and various materials will be recovered (steel, aluminum, glass, concrete) for 2,000 tons;
- Greater efficiency in the grid with consequent savings for the system equal to over 25 million
euros a year:
- 400 MW of more efficient production capacity with a saving of nearly 20 million euros;
- Fewer electricity grid losses up to 68 million kWh/year equal to nearly 6.5 million euros
- Improved quality and safety: increasing grid reliability and reducing the probability of non-supplied energy for nearly 50,000 kWh/year.
This project will also bring significant advantages to the area’s economy: work for over 100 employees and at least 18 companies and firms involved. The new line will also having significant technological advantages. The project will mainly use tubular "single-pole" pylons or with a "low environmental impact" to replace the traditional pyramid-based pylons. The use of this new type of pylons will allow reducing by 50 times the area within the territory occupied by the lines and the areas occupied by the pylons on the land, dropping from 250 sqm occupied by a pyramid-based pylon to 5 sqm occupied by a tubular "single-pole" pylon.
"We are pleased with this important result – commented Terna’s CEO Flavio Cattaneo. After the "S. Fiorano - Robbia" electricity line between Lombardy and Switzerland completed in 2005 and the "Turbigo-Rho" electricity line just outside of Milan, completed in 2006, Lombardy will soon have another energy highway that is essential for a region that alone consumes each year 20% of the total national demand, having however an energy deficit of over 30%. There is no development without a grid in Lombardy as in the entire country. Much still has to be done and Terna will continue its commitment in this field; a joint effort is however necessary to expedite authorization procedures. I would also like to point out that this project will be implemented without any public funding."
The 380 kV “Chignolo Po-Maleo” power line represents one of Terna’s most important projects in Lombardy, where the company has planned investments for over 1 billion euros – out of the 7 planned at the national level – for developing the region’s electricity grid. In addition to the "Chignolo Po Maleo" electricity line, development projects also include the 380 kV “Trino-Lacchiarella” electricity line presently under authorizations, upgrading the grid in Valcamonica and Valtellina, whose works are in progress and almost completed, and upgrading the grid in Milan’s metropolitan area for which coordination activity is underway.
