Sustainability means operating daily in a responsible way: respecting its stakeholders in the direct field of business and integrating in the management policies and systems a careful consideration of environmental and social effects caused by the company’s activities.
The objective is to establish and maintain relations based on trust: good relations with personnel, with suppliers, with grid users and with customers in general, with the institutions and regulatory authorities; special attention to environmental effects and to the territory are essential conditions for growth and for creating value for shareholders.
A sense of responsibility is part of the cultural heritage of the people working at Terna: arising from the awareness and pride in providing a general interest service for the community.
With the Code of Ethics we identified our principles and commitments towards stakeholders: the continuity and quality of the electricity service is crucial; equity, non-discrimination, transparency, environmental and social respect are explicit guidelines for daily managing the company’s activities. These principles hold true for all the Group’s subsidiaries.
We acknowledge and undertake to comply with the ten United Nations Global Compact Principles, the highest values that the United Nations recommends to companies.
The ten Global Compact principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption enjoy universal consensus and are derived from:
- the universal declaration of human rights
- the international labour organisation’s declaration on fundamental principles
and rights at work - the Rio declaration on environment and development
- the United Nations convention against corruption.

The term sustainability originates from the definition of sustainable development: “development that meets the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, “Our Common Future”, 1987). Within a company, sustainability concerns the overall policies, management systems and initiatives that devote attention to social and environmental effects of the way business is carried out.
