Terna’s "mission" in the Balkans

The Balkans represent a strategic development area of great interest to Terna, considering the region’s geographical proximity and energy potential, which make it the ideal terminal for new submarine interconnections with Italy.

Terna intends to develop a double strategic mission in the Balkan area:

  • as the Italian grid operator, a public utility service consisting in the development of interconnections with the region, aimed at the electricity system’s safety and at increasing competition in the Italian electricity market;
  • as a private industrial company, investment opportunities in the grid infrastructure of the Balkan countries, based on its own professional and technological resources.

Terna’s development activities in the Balkans include:

  • the construction of new submarine electricity connections with the Balkan area;
  • the development of new transmission infrastructures within the area in order to develop local electricity grids and strengthen exchange corridors with Italy;
  • the implementation of technical assistance programs for authorities and stakeholders of the local electricity sector;
  • participation in public bodies that support the creation of a regional electricity market and its integration into the European energy market.
