What is dispatching?
Electricity cannot be stored. It is therefore necessary to continuously produce the quantity of energy required by all consumers (families and industries) and deliver it to the national transmission grid so that electricity supply and demand are always balanced, therefore guaranteeing continuity and safety of the service supplied. Management of this energy flow along the grid is known as dispatching.
Who owns the transmission grid?
Terna is the main owner of the National Electricity Transmission Grid; it owns over 63,500 km of high voltage lines throughout the national territory and 431 transforming and switching stations.
What is the activity carried out by National Control Center?
It ensures the operation of the national electricity system in conditions of utmost safety in order to guarantee continuity and quality in the electricity service. For this purpose, the National Control Center continuously acquires all the data and information on the situation of the electricity system and, in relation to the electricity demand trend, takes action to guarantee a good balance between demand and supply.
What is the National Transmission Grid Development Plan?
The National Transmission Grid Development Plan is a document that Terna draws up each year and which contains all the development activity undertaken, or to be undertaken in the ten-year period involved, on the Transmission Grid. For every region, activity is grouped on the basis of voltage levels and according to types (stations, joints and long-distance power lines). Once drawn up, the Plan is then submitted to the interested Regions and to the Ministry for Economic Development that verifies its compliance with existing laws, with its strategic and operative guidelines and with the objectives deriving from the Concession.
What is an interconnection?
Electricity exchanges among neighboring countries (interconnection) play a very important role in the European policies for establishing a single market. At present, the Italian electricity grid is “interconnected” with the grids of neighboring countries through 22 lines that connect it with France, Corsica, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and Greece.
When did the peak electricity demand occur?
56.822 MW is the new historical record for maximum power demand on the Italian electricity grid. The figure, registered on Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at 5 pm, in a day characterized by a very cold temperature, is 233 megawatt higher than the former historical record (56,589 MW, July 20, 2007) and 2,435 MW (+4.5%) higher than the 2006 winter record (54,387 MW, December 13, 2006).
Which is the body in charge of preparing and distributing statistics on the national electricity system?
Terna’s Statistical Office, part of the Sistan (National Statistical System), has the statutory task of drafting the official statistics for the entire national electricity sector and is therefore also responsible for our country for disseminating official statistical information to international bodies such as Eurostat, IEA, OCSE, the UN.

Where can I find the list of electricity distribution companies over the national territory?
In Terna’s website, at impresedistributrici.terna.it, the list is published of distribution companies and relative identification codes used by them to define POD codes. In the same section, the historical archives are available of changes occurred in these companies. Terna also provides, for each distribution company in the list, the information on the classification as a reference or subordinate distribution company pursuant to Attachment A to resolution 107/09 of the Authority for Electricity and Gas (TIS).
What is MyTerna portal?
MyTerna is the B2B portal implemented by Terna to render commercial and communication relations with electricity Operators more efficient and effective. It is a service portal that Terna provides to its counterparties, and is designed on the needs of each customer based on a personal access system.
Who are the users of MyTerna and which services are offered?
MyTerna is a portal for all Electricity Operators such as: Withdrawal Dispatching Users, Input Dispatching Users, Producers, Distributors, Shippers, Interruptible customers. The portal offers its users the possibility of carrying out various transactions; services provided are divided in the following sections:
My Data: allows viewing in real time the main data of the relation with Terna:
- Master Data
- Contracts and financial guarantees
- Billing Data
- Technical and Market Data
Master Data Management: allows directly managing the master data of the company while managing key contacts and users.
Managing Connection Requests to the NTG: allows requesting a new connection to Terna’s grid, verifying the progress of the request and monitoring the lifecycle of the connection request up to the signing of the contract.
Managing Contracts and Guarantees: allows entering new contracts, exchanging, renewing or terminating existing ones, viewing the progress of the requests. Furthermore, for all contracts involving the payment of a financial guarantee covering contract obligations, all the lifecycle of that guarantee can be managed. Requests to integrate/reduce, replace or return a guarantee can be managed, viewing in real time the progress of each file; in particular, it is presently possible to enter the following contracts/agreements:
- Withdrawal and Input Dispatching
- CTR and MIS Agreements
Exchange of information with Terna: allows submitting a ticket for a claim or requesting explanations on specific issues to Terna’s departments in charge of these matters, verifying in real time the progress of the requests.
Viewing and reading the principal news referring to Terna and the electricity market, links of interests supporting operations on the electricity market and the principal documents required in managing relations with Terna.
How should I register on MyTerna?
After having accessed from MyTerna, you can select:
- “You already are a user of MyTerna portal” if you have already registered to the portal or if you want to terminate the registration process replacing the temporary password you received by email.
- “You are not yet registered on MyTerna portal"; if you want to register to the portal. The following can register on MyTerna Portal:
- a Counterparty that has already entered with Terna a contract/agreement or started a connection request to the NTG,
- a New User, that holds no contract relations with Terna nor Connection requests to the NTG.
What does it mean to request a connection to Terna’s grid?
Requesting a connection to the National Electricity Transmission Grid means expecting to input/withdraw energy from the Italian HV or EHV electricity system. For all plants with a power exceeding 10,000 kW, connection requests must be submitted to Terna.
In which area of MyTerna portal can a connection request to the NTG be submitted?
In the portal section “My services” the area “Managing connection requests” is present. Within this area, the user can submit a connection request to the NTG by selecting “New connection request”: a specific form must then be filled out and the documents required must be attached.
How do I obtain grid connection?
The connection procedure starts with a request that must be filled out on My Terna portal, indicating the data of the applicant and of the plant to be connected to the NTG. Following this, Terna prepares an estimate that identifies the works on the NTG that are necessary for the connection, together with relative timeframes and costs. On the basis of this estimate, a project of the works to be implemented on the NTG must be drafted; this project will then have to be authorized by the authorities in charge, as well as the user’s plant. After having obtained the authorization, still through the portal, a Minimum Detailed Technical Solution is requested, that Terna drafts and sends to the user. Lastly, the connection contract can be entered into.
Is the entire connection procedure managed on MyTerna portal?
Yes, with the exception for the project and the contract that will be managed on hardcopies. All other obligations included in the file are made online through the portal functions (ex. Notices regarding progress of the authorization procedure, notices on work progress, acceptance of the estimate – SMTG – and of the detailed solution - STMD).
How are the works for connecting to the NTG authorized?
NTG works for connection of a plant to the NTG are authorized in two ways:
- for production plants from renewable sources, a single procedure is carried out for the production plant and the NTG connection, pursuant to Legislative Decree no. 387/03;
- for other types of plants, Terna may autonomously carry out the authorization procedure for the NTG works necessary for the connection, according to Law no. L. 239/04.
In which cases should the 30% connection fee be paid upon the acceptance of the connection estimate?
The payment of 30% of the connection fee upon the acceptance of the connection estimate should only and exclusively be paid for connection requests submitted after January 1, 2011, or any power variation in requests that were already submitted.
I have a connection request for a production plant for which I must submit the periodical report on progress of the Authorization procedure, what should I do?
The form for this report is available under "View my Ge.Co. files" by clicking on "Request" for the connection file for which the report must be submitted and then on “Authorization procedure communication”. The portal will propose the possibility of entering the explanatory notes on the procedure progress. It is sufficient to enter these notes and send them to Terna to meet the obligation established by AEEG Resolution no. 125/10. It is no longer necessary to send documents (neither in computer format nor in hardcopy).
I have a connection request for a production plant for which I must submit the Notice regarding the start of the Authorization Procedure, what should I do?
The form to be used to submit the notice is available under "View my Ge.Co. files" by clicking on "Request" for the connection request for which the notice must be sent. The portal will propose the possibility to upload the document certifying the start of the authorization procedure; at the end of uploading, a field will become available for entering the start date of the authorization procedure.
I have a connection request for a production plant for which I must submit the Notice pursuant to AEEG Resolution no. 99/08 and subsequent integrations and modifications, for informing about the start/delay of beginning of works, what should I do?
Such notice is present on the portal under "SAL Notices" (SAL "Stato Avanzamento Lavori" Progress status). The form for this notice is available under "View my Ge.Co. files" by clicking on "Request" for the connection file for which the notice must be submitted. The portal will propose the possibility to enter the start date of the works or the reasons for not having started the works and at the same time, the expected start dates for the works can be updated, as well as for work completion and entrance into operation. On the deadline section, the date within which the notice must be sent can be viewed and the days left to the expiration (“View my Ge.Co. files", by clicking on "Status" relative to the request involved). It is no longer necessary to send the hardcopy form.
