The Italian electricity sector is evolving very rapidly due to the effects of profound energy transition, focused on achieving sustainability goals and improving system security. The most significant elements of the new model are the integration and management of renewable energy, energy efficiency, grid digitalisation and storage systems

The traditional “one-directional” system (production, →transmission→, distribution,→ loads) is now being replaced by a more complex and integrated system characterised by multi-directional electricity flows, high volatility and low predictability. As a result, the leading European Transmission System Operators such as Terna are redesigning strategies and grid investments, considering in particular the profound impact associated with the development of renewable energy.

In this context, it is essential that Terna reports the data published in this sector, focusing on the consistency, number of plants and installed power of the renewable sources in Italy (Source GAUDI).

The GAUDI system

The GAUDI system - (Gestione Anagrafica Unica degli Impianti e Unità di Produzione - Consolidated Records Management of Production Plants and Units) - is the consolidated Italian records management system for all the country’s electricity production plants. The platform (the creation of which was stipulated in ARERA Resolution ARG/elt 124/10) is developed and managed by Terna. As well as being able to individually identify the production plants, it serves other significant purposes for the electricity system: 
- Through a suitable control panel, it can monitor the entire life cycle of a production plant, from its grid connection application to its commissioning and its authorisation on the energy markets;
- It can rationalise the data streams between the various stakeholders operating in the electricity sector (Terna, GSE, distributors, producers, etc.) with reference to updating the records of the production plants;
- It comprises one of the main sources of information for managing the Italian electricity system in the planning, programming and operation phases;
- It collects the information on the technical characteristics of the plants (e.g. aligning the distributed generation plants with the provisions of the Grid Code) which are also useful for evaluating the level of resilience of the Italian electricity system in the face of grid disturbances.
